Everyday Lives of the Egyptians

Would you like to learn about the lives of the ancient Egyptians in a practical hands-on way? Spend the day with a qualified Egyptologist learning about the ordinary Egyptians and their religion, their jobs, their pastimes, and their daily lives. Each session starts with a short illustrated lecture and the opportunity to try something practical based on ancient knowledge and techniques.
To be held in Room 1, RISC Organisation, 35-39 London Street, Reading, RG1 4PS a short walk from Reading station.
No prior knowledge of ancient Egyptian history is necessary although it would be an advantage. There are limited spaces of 10 people to a group, to ensure everyone can participate equally.
13:00-14:00 - Introduction
Introduction to the lives of the ancient Egyptians, from the cradle to the grave, discussing families, relationships, religious beliefs, birth and death. There will be a practical element to this section.
14:00-15:00 – Careers
A look at the careers held by the people of Egypt, both of men and women, including wages, working week and excuses for skiving from work. There will be a practical element to this section.
15:00-15:30 - Break
15:30-16:30 – Pastimes
A study of how the Egyptians spent their free time, investigating poetry, literature, satire, sport, board games and celebrations. There will be a practical element to this section.

Hieroglyphics Study Day

Are you learning hieroglyphs, or interested in learning more about the language of the ancient Egyptians? Would you like to learn about the language in a practical way? If so this study day is for you. Spend the day with a qualified Egyptologist at the Griffith Institute Archive and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Look at the early records of hieroglyphs, and then investigate how they were used on objects, ostraca, papyrus and stela. No prior knowledge of ancient Egyptian language is necessary although it would be an advantage. There are limited spaces of 10 people to a group, to ensure everyone can participate equally.
Morning
10:00 -12:30 - Griffith Institute Oxford
A unique opportunity to visit the Egyptological archive and look at the records of some of the earliest explorers to Egypt. See photographs from the 1880’s, sketches of hieroglyphs before they could read them at marvel at the intricate records of Howard Carter when excavating the tomb of Tutankhamun. All originals and all once owned by the true founders of Egyptology. (This session is likely to run-over as the team at the Griffith are very enthusiastic!).
Lunch 12:30-13:30
Afternoon
13:30-15:30 – Ashmolean Museum
A short walk to the Ashmolean Museum, to see how the hieroglyphs are presented on the objects from ancient Egypt, including statues, stela, seals and even a temple.
15:30-16:00 – Coffee and summary of day
