TWO DAY SUMMER SCHOOL
2009 Dates TBC
Would you like to learn about Egypt in a practical way? Would
you like to
look at objects with the eye of an expert? If so this
two day summer school is for you.
Spend two days with a qualified Egyptologist at the British Museum and the Petrie Museum. Learn about art, and how to identify dating characteristics as well as to “read” the art to find out what is really being presented. We will also learn about the everyday lives of the Egyptians through the objects they would have used. There will also be an opportunity to learn about the funerary beliefs of the Egyptians, as well as the importance of the coffin art and funerary goods.
No prior knowledge of ancient Egyptian history is necessary although it would be an advantage. There are limited spaces of 10 people to a group, to ensure everyone can participate equally.
Day 1 –
10:00-12:30 – Everyday lives
We will start with a short talk by a member of staff from the museum about how Petrie started the collection. Then we will look at the jewellery and clothes of the ancient Egyptians, and compare with the imagery we saw at the British Museum, as well as sculpture at the Petrie. We will also examine the cosmetic items of this museum and you should be able to identify a number of erotic symbolism on these objects.
12:30-13:45 – Lunch
13:45-15:30 – Everyday Lives
